Do you Need Chiropractic Treatment?

Should you need a treatment every time you see your chiropractor?

It is essential that you understand the concept that "feeling good" does not mean that you are healthy and that you don't need treatment or care. Unfortunately, people throughout North Lakes, Brisbane, and all Australia make this critical error every day. Healthy people can have symptoms and unhealthy people can have no symptoms.

So if in the next section when we use the word "broke," we are referring to a body that is or is not working properly ... and that has nothing to do with the presence or absence of symptoms.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Now, chiropractic is not a treatment per se for any disease or condition. (See attached link for a previously written article). The purpose of our chiropractic tests is to determine if your body is functioning and healing properly. If not, you need an adjustment because your health is moving downward (called "Accumulative Destructive Survival Value").

However, if everything is working properly (even if you do still have symptoms) why would we adjust you? Your health is improving (called "Accumulative Constructive Survival Value"). When you visit your dentist for routine treatment, does he/she drill on every visit? We certainly hope not! If so, there are likely one of two things going on: 1) you have extensive damage, and you are really doing something wrong in your life; 2) your dentist isn't very effective at what he/she does. When people start chiropractic care, their adjustments may not hold for longer than a few days. Generally speaking, there are two reasons for this:

  1. Your muscles and ligaments which stabilize the spine are weak from years of neglect and will take time to get stronger.
  1. Lifestyle. The things that you do in your day-to-day life are the very things that have brought you to where you are now. "If you keep doing as you've always done, you'll keep getting what you've always got." You may not need to make any changes right away, but if you want you to want to truly heal you may need to make some important decisions about your life in the near future.

As your body heals, we do expect for your adjustments to hold longer and longer.

What this means as far as routine office visits go, the best days are those days when you do not need an adjustment. … No cavities! This may be a strange concept if you have visited a chiropractor before, who may have adjusted you on every visit. It does not mean that we are right and they are wrong (or visa versa).

It simply means that we have a different approach and expectations for our role in helping you to get well and stay well. From an Upper Cervical chiropractic perspective, when your adjustment is holding your body is healing and anything that we do beyond that is likely to mess things up.
