Problems with the upper neck can feed into the jaw (temporomandibular joint, aka TMJ) and create facial pains and other associated issues … AND the TMJ can feed into the neck and create headaches and neck issues … BUT TO TOP IT OFF when BOTH things are going on it, it can create a real-world of hurt.
Which is Your Problem? Neck or TMJ or Both?
At Atlas Chiropractic in North Lakes, Brisbane, we refer to this problem and area of the body as "The Halo" The halo refers to an imaginary ring that goes around the base of the skull, including the C1, C2, and C3 vertebrae to the front of the teeth (which includes the TMJ and also a specific part of the skull called the sphenoid).
The significance of the halo is that any/all anatomical structures in this part of the body end up affecting the brain and central nervous system the exact same way. Why? Because they form "a halo" around the brain and brainstem, which can be affected by 360 degrees.
Let's say that you were to go through every blog post that I've ever written about the Atlas, Axis, and Upper Cervical care. The point I'm raising is that if you substitute the word "Atlas" for "TMJ" or "skull," no matter what I'm talking or writing about, the neurological effects will be identical and the context of the article will be just as accurate.
The TMJ as a part of the Combination Lock
We've written previously about the combination lock: i.e., if a person has more than one thing going on in their body, to get the health outcome they are looking for they need to have all those elements addressed in the correct order before they may see any change. It's important the remember the importance of the upper cervical region as it relates to the TMJ - especially when we're dealing with those complicated type of pain and neurological syndromes such as Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, Migraines, Dizziness/Vertigo, etc.
One of the most important things we aim to do at Atlas Chiropractic is to figure out which one or which combination you need in order to help you get well as efficiently as possible.
- If the problem is the neck, you need an Upper Cervical (Atlas), the specific chiropractor.
- If the problem is the jaw, you need a specialized dentist.
- If the problem is both, you need them both.
