What is upper cervical chiropractic?

Upper cervical chiropractic is a unique form of healthcare that focuses on the alignment of the top two bones in the neck and their effect on the nervous system and health.

The nervous system is the master control system of the body. It coordinates the function of every muscle, organ and cell in your body. For your exercise program to work right, for your diet to work right, and for you to have the health and wellbeing that you want requires full expression, coordination and flow of your nervous system.

The master control centre of your nervous system is the brainstem, which is located at the level of the top two vertebrae in your neck: the atlas (C1) and the axis (C2).

The atlas and axis are responsible for almost all of your head movement. The exchange for this flexibility is that the upper neck is susceptible to injury. It doesn’t have to be the type of injury that fractures or dislocates anything.

If any injury occurs that misaligns the bones in the upper part of your neck even by a few millimetres, that can be enough to cause abnormal nervous system function that diminishes your body’s ability to work at its optimum and that can produce symptoms or problems anywhere in your body.

So the focus of upper cervical chiropractic is on restoring the proper alignment and motion to the top two bones in the neck to help improve the function of your nervous system and the ability of your body to be healthy.
